We are at the crossroads between two civilizations. On one hand, there is the two-dimensional reality we live in, where “physical” and “digital” occupy different levels. On the other hand, the Metaverse, where the real and virtual overlap, generating an all-inclusive three-dimensional space of all the experiences made by people.
In the Metaverse, we will be able to replicate our routines, interests and passions. We will be able to access all forms of commerce, education and entertainment. Our avatars will meet each other to organize business meetings, build relationships and communities, overcoming the limits of the internet as we know it, supplanting the current world of apps, screens and technology.
We are entering the web 3.0, a spatial web where we can enhance our lives in a new global connection, beyond the boundaries of current comprehension. “Meta” indeed means beyond.
Conceived as a sci-fi utopia in 1992, the Metaverse is taking shape right before our eyes. Due to the restrictions imposed by COVID-19, plus the consequent acceleration of digital technology and its growing importance in our lives.

During the last year in particular, a lot of evident signs have gathered: the push for innovation in virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies; proliferation of gaming platforms as social and cultural aggregators; growing attention from the media and major internet companies, who competed in announcing their millionaire plans and investments.
Current initiatives recall the arrival of pioneers to an unexplored land. There is a lack of maps and landmarks. They approach the new world with one foot still in the old one. Single houses are built, which one day may become communities and villages.
The first great challenge of the Metaverse will be to shorten the "pioneering" phase. To overcome the limits of proprietary solutions that are already proposed or under construction, to make them flow into a single shared habitat. An always-on virtual space, where millions of people can interact with the same continuity and intensity of the physical world.
What is being prepared is the construction of a new level of reality, of which values, economic system and social rules, capable of governing the complexity of a virtual environment that avatars will be able to use with the same purposes as in the real world, will be defined: from entertainment, work, fitness to communication.
In this scenario, the Metaverse, instead of being a separate universe, will be extended to both the digital and physical world. Both public and private networks, both open and closed platforms. And it will offer an unprecedented exchange of data, resources and content, created and managed by the largest imaginable audience of contributors, be they individuals, groups, organizations or commercial enterprises.
A great challenge, one whose boundaries are still undefined but with infinite potential, both for companies from every sector and all digital professionals.
